Solo website alternatives after the shutdown
Last checked: 2026-10-09
Solo, Mozilla's AI website builder, is closing. Its Shutdown FAQ says: "All Solo websites and data will be deleted on November 30, 2026. There will be no way to recover your site, account, or data after that date." (Solo Shutdown FAQ)
You have two kinds of options. A static host puts your existing site back online as files, usually for free, but you lose the visual editor. A website builder gives you an editor and extras like stores or blogs, but you rebuild the site there, and most charge for a custom domain.
If you haven't exported yet, start with our export guide. What happens to my Solo site on November 30 quotes Solo's own wording on the deadline.

Static hosts: free, and your site stays as it is
Solo's export has only a CSV of image links, not the images (Solo Shutdown FAQ). Our free tool downloads them and gives you a folder you can host. Your export stays in your browser. Public images and styles are downloaded through our server. A static host can't run Solo's contact form, so plan to replace it.
Cloudflare Pages
Cloudflare says "All plans come with unlimited sites, seats, requests, and bandwidth." Its Free plan limits page lists 20,000 files per site, 25 MiB per file, 100 custom domains per project and 100 Pages projects per account (Cloudflare Pages, Pages limits). You can upload by drag and drop (Direct Upload).
- Who it suits: anyone who wants a free, static copy of their Solo site.
- Custom domain: yes. A subdomain such as www works with a CNAME record. For a bare domain (example.com), Cloudflare says your domain must use Cloudflare's nameservers (Custom domains).
Netlify
Netlify's Free plan is $0 and includes "Add Custom domains with SSL" and a "300 credit limit / month". Deploys, bandwidth and form submissions use credits, and a site that hits the limit is paused until the next billing cycle. Personal is $9/month and Pro is $20/month (Netlify pricing).
- Who it suits: people who want to drag a folder into a browser and be done. Custom domain: yes, on Free.
- Watch out: Log in to Netlify first. Drop works without an account, but if you drop without signing in, the site is protected with a temporary password until you claim it. (Netlify Drop quickstart)
GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages is available in public repositories on GitHub Free (What is GitHub Pages?). Published sites may be no larger than 1 GB, with a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month. GitHub says Pages isn't for running "your online business, e-commerce site, or any other website that is primarily directed at either facilitating commercial transactions" (GitHub Pages limits).
- Who it suits: personal, club or portfolio sites, for people comfortable with GitHub.
- Custom domain: yes, both subdomains and apex domains (Custom domains and GitHub Pages).
- Watch out: on the free tier the repository is public. Never put your private form-data file in it.
Website builders: when they're the better choice
A builder is often the better choice. That's true if you update the site weekly, if other people edit it, or if you take bookings or payments. You'll rebuild rather than upload the export, but you can reuse your text and the images the tool saved.
Carrd
Carrd describes itself as "Simple, free, fully responsive one-page sites". Pro plans start at $9/year (Pro Lite, three sites). Custom domains and forms come with Pro Standard, from $19/year (Carrd, Carrd Pro).
- Who it suits: a one-page site such as a profile, landing page or link page.
Wix
Wix says "Creating your own website is free", and that with a Premium plan "you can connect your own domain, remove Wix branding from your site, and more". The plans page lists Light, Core, Business and Business Elite, and notes that "Prices and currency vary by location" (Wix plans).
- Who it suits: small businesses that want drag-and-drop editing, bookings or a store.
Squarespace
Squarespace says it "doesn't offer a free plan", but every site starts with a 14-day free trial. Basic is $19/month billed annually or $25 monthly. You can attach domains to any plan, and annual plans include one year of free domain registration (Squarespace pricing).
- Who it suits: people who want polished templates and are happy to pay.
WordPress.com
The free plan uses a WordPress.com subdomain, has 1 GB of storage and shows ads, and it doesn't include a custom domain. Personal is $4/month billed annually or $9 billed monthly, and annual plans include a free domain for the first year (WordPress.com pricing).
- Who it suits: blogs and sites that grow over time.
Framer
Framer's Free plan is $0, with a Framer domain and 1 GB of bandwidth. Basic is $10/month on yearly billing and adds a custom domain, 30 pages and 50 GB of bandwidth. Pro is $30/month (Framer pricing).
- Who it suits: design-minded people who want animation and layout control.
Solo itself suggests Wix, Squarespace and WordPress, or AI builders such as Bolt or Lovable (Solo Shutdown FAQ). We haven't checked Bolt or Lovable pricing for this page.
Whichever you choose, download your Solo data before November 30, 2026. For the static route, see Move a Solo site to Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.
FAQ
What is the cheapest way to keep my Solo site online?
Host the exported files on Cloudflare Pages, Netlify or GitHub Pages. All three have a free option with custom domains. You lose the visual editor, and forms need a separate service.
Should I pick a static host or a website builder?
A static host if you want the site as it is now and rarely change it. A builder if you want a visual editor, a store or a blog. With a builder, you rebuild the site rather than upload your export.
Can I keep my custom domain?
Yes, with every option on this page, but not always on the free tier. Cloudflare Pages, Netlify and GitHub Pages support custom domains on free plans. Wix and WordPress.com need a paid plan, Carrd needs Pro Standard, and Framer needs Basic or higher. Squarespace has no free plan.
Do these prices stay the same?
No. Prices and free-tier limits change. Every figure here was checked on the vendor's own page on 2026-10-09. Check the linked page before you pay.
