Move a Solo site to WordPress

WordPress cannot install the tool's ZIP as a WordPress site. Official steps are: copy the main text, then upload original image files. (Import from other platforms)

Need the site online as HTML instead? Host it on Cloudflare Pages or Netlify.

Start from the tool ZIP

  1. Unzip website-ready-to-host.zip. Stop when index.html sits next to images/ (and assets/ if styles were saved). Nested pages stay in folders such as about/index.html.
  2. Open each HTML page in a browser. Copy the main text only. Pasting the whole page can produce unwanted HTML. (Import from other platforms)
  3. In WordPress: Pages → Add New. Paste the text. Upload files from images/ into Media. (Media library)
  4. Keep private-form-data-do-not-upload.zip off the web. Open contact_form_submissions.csv and newsletter_submissions.csv in a spreadsheet for old messages.

What carries over / what doesn't

PagesRebuild each HTML file as a WordPress page. Nested folders are extra pages, not an import.
TextCopy-paste the main text.
ImagesReuse files in images/. Upload those, not remote Solo links.
Styles / fontsDo not carry over. assets/_next/ CSS and fonts stay in the ZIP. Pick a WordPress theme.
FormsDo not work. The tool strips Solo scripts. Rebuild a form in WordPress, or use an email link.
Form submissionsNot in the website ZIP. They are CSV rows in the private ZIP.

Custom domain

If you bought the domain through Solo Domains (not IONOS), move it to Name.com first. (Solo Shutdown FAQ)

WordPress.com's free plan uses a yoursite.wordpress.com subdomain, 1 GB of storage, and ads. It does not include a custom domain. Connecting a domain you already own is a paid-plan feature. (Pricing · Connect a domain)

FAQ

Can I upload my Solo ZIP to WordPress?

No. WordPress.com's HTML-site guide is copy-paste, not a ZIP import. The tool output is static HTML, images/, and optional assets/, not a WordPress export.

What can I reuse from the tool ZIP?

Text from the HTML pages, and picture files in images/. Styles and fonts in assets/ do not become a WordPress theme. Form submissions live only in the private CSV ZIP.

Does WordPress.com include a custom domain on the free plan?

No. The free plan uses a WordPress.com subdomain, has 1 GB of storage, and shows ads. Connecting a domain you already own needs a paid plan. Check that page before you pay; prices change.

What happens to my export when I use the free tool?

Your export stays in your browser. Public images and styles are downloaded through our server. We count anonymous page visits.
